When Collins First Nation burned to the ground, smoke spread across eastern North America. But most people don't know that the community at the heart of this fire were totally abandoned - first by Premier Doug Ford and then by the federal government. Grand Chief Linda Debassige lays out the devastating impact of this fire and the failure of both levels of government to support the people. Prior to the fire badly-needed fire suppression was moved out of the community by the Province. As the flames closed in, the community made desperate calls to the government as the fire approached. They were completely ignored. Families barely got out with their clothes on their back. Grand Chief Debassige has joined other Indigenous leaders is advocating for a public inquiry into the failures that led to this tragedy.
