Extreme heat across western Europe has shifted eastwards, with temperatures nearing 40 degrees Celsius forecast for Hungary, Romania and the Balkans in the coming days. Weeks of hot, dry conditions have left the Danube at exceptionally low levels, threatening river transport and energy supplies.
