Almost every report framed that gap as a race China is losing. It isn't a race. Those five machines were never built to compete with ASML on specifications. They were built for a bill moving through the US Congress that would cut SMIC, Hua Hong and ChangXin Memory off from ASML sales — and from ASML servicing. This is the part almost nobody covered: a lithography scanner is not a product, it's a subscription. Cut the service contract and nobody has to seize anything.
