India's E85 flex-fuel vehicle ecosystem is beginning to gain momentum. After a weak June, registrations of E85-compatible vehicles picked up in July, with two-wheelers driving most of the demand. Hero MotoCorp's recently launched E85-compatible motorcycles accounted for the majority of new registrations, while adoption of Maruti Suzuki's flex-fuel WagonR remained limited. The government is also accelerating infrastructure development, aiming to expand E85 fuel availability from a few dozen outlets today to around 500 pumps by the end of this year and 5,000 outlets next year. The Centre has defended its ethanol blending programme, stating that it has helped shield consumers from volatile global crude oil prices. According to the government, without ethanol blending, petrol prices could have climbed to around ₹125 per litre, compared with roughly ₹94.77 per litre under the current 20% ethanol blend.
