Groups are calling for the immediate release of Ugandan opposition figure Kizza Besigye and his lawyer and former Mayor of Kampala Erias Lukwago, amid growing concerns over the health and treatment of political detainees. Speaking in Nairobi, the activists urged Ugandans to stand up and demand greater accountability from their government as they called for international pressure on Ugandan authorities over alleged human rights violations, including a review of foreign security support to the country. Besigye collapsed in court on Wednesday during his trial in Kampala and was rushed to Mulago National Referral Hospital, where his wife Winnie Byanyima said he was admitted to the ICU and remained unconscious. Besigye has been in detention since November 2024 alongside his aide Hajj Obaid Lutale, with both facing treason charges they maintain are politically motivated.
