With 1700 miles of coastline, it’s no surprise Shetland loves a boat race. All over the islands are teams racing yoal boats – a traditional Shetland vessel with links to its Viking past. We meet skipper Laura of the Hamnavoe club as she prepares for the last race of the season. In Lerwick, it’s the biggest Shetland Sheep sale of the year. Farmer Eric has the honour of judging the pre-sale show to crown the best ram of the day – a title that should attract a premium price. Shetlanders self-sufficiency means nothing goes to waste. So the wool from a sheep has long since been in demand. Any concerns about a dying trade are allayed by the annual Wool Week – a celebration of Shetland’s wool and knitting community. While the industry has moved on to bigger and faster machines, they are keeping traditional Shetland garment knitting alive. Lifelong traditional crofter Pearl returns as she rolls back the years to when she was a midwife when her favourite cow needs support with calving.
