Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has announced his decision to meet his Karnataka counterpart D.K. Shivakumar during his planned visit to Bengaluru on August 3. The move has drawn attention, as opposition parties, including the DMK, had urged him not to go ahead with the visit, arguing that it could help Karnataka further delay the Cauvery water-sharing process. Archived records from The Hindu show that in the mid-1980s, then-Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran, or MGR, repeatedly sent senior ministers to Karnataka to seek the release of Cauvery water to protect paddy crops in the delta region. We look back at past diplomatic efforts between the two neighbouring States over the sharing of Cauvery waters. Report: T. Ramakrishnan Production: Shikha Kumari Editing: Thamodharan B.
