A funeral director who hoarded bodies and gave grieving relatives the wrong ashes has been jailed for 20 years. A court heard how Robert Bush, who ran Legacy Independent Funeral Directors in Hull, failed to carry out promised cremations and handed people remains that did not belong to their loved ones “with a smile on his face”. Thirty-five bodies in varying states of decomposition and half a tonne of ashes were found at his premises on Hessle Road following a report to police in March 2024. Bush had also sold fraudulent funeral plans and pocketed charitable donations given in memory of the deceased. Hull Crown Court heard he had breached the trust of bereaved families "on an almost industrial scale". Sentencing Bush for 67 offences, including preventing a lawful and decent burial and fraud, the judge Mr Justice Hilliard KC said on Friday: "I do not think I have ever known offences affect so many people and so many people so deeply."
