Morocco is suspected of allowing an unprecedented migrant surge into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta amid growing tensions with Madrid. Up to 60,000 people crossed from Morocco by land and sea within roughly 24 hours, overwhelming the enclave. At least 57 people died while attempting the journey, while around 48,000 later returned to Morocco. Spain’s official estimate placed the number of arrivals at approximately 49,000. Western intelligence sources are reportedly examining whether Moroccan authorities deliberately permitted the influx to pressure Spain. However, no firm evidence of state coordination has yet been established, and other reporting points to social-media rumours, economic hardship and migrant-smuggling networks.
