Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has declared that the far right will not return to power while he is alive, escalating the battle ahead of October’s presidential election. Speaking at a Workers’ Party event, Lula rejected foreign involvement and challenged Donald Trump, Javier Milei and other international leaders supporting his political rivals to “let them come.” Lula said he wanted help only from Brazilian voters and accused Trump of arrogance while calling for greater investment in universities, engineering, mathematics and artificial intelligence. His principal rival is Flavio Bolsonaro, son of imprisoned former president Jair Bolsonaro, who has received support from Trump, Milei and Benjamin Netanyahu. Lula plans to launch his campaign formally on August 16 at the historic stadium associated with the metalworkers’ movement that propelled his political rise.
