Spain deployed soldiers and additional police after tens of thousands of migrants crossed from Morocco into Ceuta, overwhelming the small Spanish enclave. Early reports estimated that up to 60,000 people entered. Spanish authorities later put the figure at around 50,000 and said more than 48,000 returned to Morocco within 48 hours. At least 67 people died during the crossings. France strengthened checks at its Spanish border, while Italy temporarily restored border controls on travel from Spain. Spain has installed a floating sea barrier, and EU interior ministers are preparing emergency talks. Spanish officials blame people-smuggling networks and misleading social-media claims about a recent court ruling.
