NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope has revealed that star formation in the Andromeda Galaxy has been declining for approximately 500 million years—with an even steeper drop during the last 40 million years. By studying around 200 million stars across Andromeda, also known as M31, astronomers reconstructed the galaxy’s recent history and traced much of the decline to its enormous star-forming ring. But one region appears to be fading faster than the rest, and a small companion galaxy called M32 may be connected to the mystery.
