The Sun’s investigation estimates that Britain spent or allocated up to £411.5 million on French border operations between May 2024 and July 2026. During that period, 50,903 attempted crossings were recorded as prevented. Dividing those figures produces an estimated cost of £8,084 for each prevention. The Home Office does not recognise the £411.5 million figure and says £342 million has actually been paid. That would still average approximately £6,700 per prevention, although the funding also pays for officers, surveillance, intelligence operations and action against smuggling networks. The prevention rate reportedly fell from 39% during the first seven months of 2025 to 34.8% during the same period in 2026. Meanwhile, 2,057 people crossed after Burnham became Prime Minister. However, the year-to-date total of 14,526 was 43% lower than at the same point in 2025. Ian Collins speaks with Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp who accuses French officers of standing by while a migrant din
