Russia is accelerating deployment of Rassvet, a home-grown low-Earth-orbit satellite network designed to reduce Moscow’s dependence on Elon Musk’s Starlink. Bureau 1440 has launched two operational batches, bringing the number of Rassvet spacecraft sent into orbit—including earlier prototypes—to approximately 38. The company says its satellites could deliver gigabit internet, low latency and laser connections between spacecraft. The constellation remains far too small for continuous coverage and currently offers only limited communication windows. However, even intermittent links could support scheduled intelligence transfers, isolated units and long-range drone operations. Russia ultimately envisions a network of approximately 300 satellites for nationwide coverage, potentially expanding to 900, although production delays make that timetable uncertain.
