Tuesday’s Michigan Senate primary has become a bitter, microcosmic referendum on many of the fights Democrats are having nationally. However it ends, the fight in a purple state that is almost always central to which party wins the White House — and which both Republicans and Democrats believe could help decide the Senate majority this year — has become the greatest showcase yet of a party split into bitter factions and an establishment struggling to lead it.
