Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky appointed former defence minister and top peace negotiator Rustem Umerov as head of Ukraine's Foreign Intelligence Service on Monday, saying the expanded role would allow Umerov to combine intelligence work with diplomacy, defence coordination and negotiations with the United States and other partners. The appointment is the latest move in a sweeping cabinet shake-up that began July 15 with the removal of Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, triggering nationwide protests by demonstrators who are demanding Fedorov's reinstatement and say they will remain on the streets until he is returned to the ministry.
