The Public Service Commission has issued an alarm over mental health, terming it one of the biggest threats facing Kenya's civil service. The commission cites depression, substance abuse, domestic disputes and financial constraints as the major causes, noting that police officers are the worst hit, with a disturbing pattern of gun-related suicides, some involving the killing of spouses and family members before officers turn the weapons on themselves. Addressing the press in Naivasha during an engagement with human resource directors drawn from various government departments, Public Service Commissioner Boya Molu said the government has activated counseling units staffed with qualified personnel in all state agencies.
