Spiked editor Tom Slater joins Julia Hartley-Brewer to challenge a prison policy that excludes rapists and child sex offenders from early release while leaving some killers eligible. Julia argues that the distinction between sexual assault and murder makes no moral sense and demands to know why those convicted of manslaughter could be released before serving the custodial portion of their sentence. Slater describes the policy as a “grim form of triangulation”, accusing the Government of putting political calculation before public protection. They discuss alternative measures, including deporting eligible foreign-national offenders, building temporary prisons and prioritising the continued detention of violent criminals.
