How often do we answer "How are you?" with "I'm fine" without thinking? For many of us, it's a habit—even when we're overwhelmed, exhausted, or struggling. This talk explores how that simple response contributes to a culture of silence, making it harder to ask for help or recognize when others need support. Drawing on their work in mental health and community building, the speakers show how choosing honesty over habit can foster deeper connections, empathy, and healing. By reimagining one of our most common daily conversations, the audience is invited to see how saying "I'm not OK" can become the beginning of meaningful dialogue rather than the end of it. Dr. Antija Allen (ann-tee-yuh, al-en) is the Director of the Pellissippi Academic Center for Excellence (PACE) and a tenured Associate Professor of Psychology with over 20 years of experience in higher education.
