In her TedX Tufts talk, speaker Emily Ruhm explores the complex interaction between vulnerability and humanitarian crises. From her experiences at the UN in New York, with the Peace Corps in Senegal, to foreign aid programming in Lesotho, to writing funding proposals for humanitarian aid in Nigeria, she describes how her definition of vulnerability has changed over time. She has learned to question the systems that are put in place to help people and analyze which people they overlook. She is now pursuing her PhD at Tufts, researching the intersectionality between gender and humanitarian crises. She encourages people to look past ideas of “vulnerable” populations, as this limits one’s agency and discounts other groups who also experience hardships. She emphasizes collecting data on all parts of a person’s identity - age, race, gender, disability in order to enhance the “do no harm” mission of humanitarian aid.
