In his TEDxTufts talk, speaker Jody Boykins shares his personal interaction with the school-to-prison pipeline in his youth. He shares how his connection to higher education through the Tufts University Prison Initiative opened him up to a vibrant new community, gave him new tools to understand his pain, and transformed education from a space of trauma to a space of belonging. Through this talk, he hopes to spotlight valuable organizations working to expand opportunities for formerly incarcerated individuals and highlight the transformative power of forgiveness, education, and community. Jody Boykins is currently an undergraduate at Tufts University and have been a student of the TUPIT program since 2022. His research focuses on adolescents who struggle with substance abuse, the associated risk and protective factors, the long-term effects and relation to incarceration, and the impact of programming on formerly incarcerated students.
