In her TEDxTufts talk, Seona Maskara explores a powerful idea: young people cannot meaningfully shape democracy if their basic needs and sense of belonging are unmet. Drawing on her research at the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE) at Tufts University, as well as her own lived experience, she introduces the concept of a “political home”, a space where young people can belong, develop their political identities, meet their basic needs, and build the confidence to lead. Through research findings, personal stories, and practical examples, Seona argues that civic engagement is not just about voting or activism, but about community. At a time when 85% of youth lack access to supportive civic spaces, she challenges organizations — and all of us — to help build the political homes young people need to feel seen, heard, and empowered.
