In her TEDxTufts talk, Seona Maskara explores a powerful idea: young people cannot meaningfully shape democracy if their basic needs and sense of belonging are unmet. Drawing on her research at the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE) at Tufts University, as well as her own lived experience, she introduces the concept of a “political home”, a space where young people can belong, develop their political identities, meet their basic needs, and build the confidence to lead. Through research findings, personal stories, and practical examples, Seona argues that civic engagement is not just about voting or activism, but about community.
