Nirmal Purja, known as 'Nims', was one of the world's leading Himalayan mountaineers. He was among 10 people killed when an avalanche thundered down the Karakoram mountain range last week. A ceremony is taking place tonight (04/08/26) in tribute to the former Gurkha and Special Forces soldier killed in an avalanche while mountaineering in Pakistan. Nims was a much-loved and well-respected pioneer in the mountaineering community; his company described him as “a leader who inspired millions through his courage, humility and unwavering belief that human potential is far greater than we often imagine.” Bear Grylls, who was a huge admirer of the adventurer, sent ITV News this message from Snowdonia.
