This talk highlights the value in educators incorporating their students’ lived experiences in their teaching. This approach is referred to as asset-based pedagogy. Andre Perez builds his argument on his experience using an asset-based approach called Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy to answer the question, “Is it okay to hate all white people?” during a comp/rhet course he was teaching to first-year college students. By incorporating the students’ experiences into the discussion, the class was able to debate a potentially polarizing question while valuing differing opinions. Andre Perez has dedicated his professional and academic careers to CUNY and is deeply committed to CUNY’s mission of providing access to quality, affordable education. As a first-generation college student, Andre has been part of the CUNY community since 2009, starting with his AA at Borough of Manhattan Community College.
