The daughter of a mother who took the cancer-linked pregnancy drug DES says doctors “completely dismissed” her mother’s fears about taking the synthetic hormone. DES was prescribed to an estimated 300,000 women between the late 1930s and 1980s to treat several issues, including miscarriage, until it was linked to rare cancers and infertility in the daughters of those who took it. Susie Martin was first told she had abnormal cells by a gynaecologist in 2001, discovering that the abnormal cells were "consistent with someone who had been exposed to DES". Now in her 50s, she says she has had between “20 to 30 operations” as a result of her mum being prescribed the drug, and will need regular cancer screenings for the rest of her life.
