Early release plan will put people at risk, says UK probation union

Probation officers say they will not be able to cope with the number of prisoners let out under the UK government's revised early release scheme. [Subscribe to our Substack newsletter: https://channel4news.substack.com/subscribe] The scheme to free up much needed prison space by releasing some offenders to serve the remainder of their sentences on the outside has provoked an outcry from victims. Now NAPO, the union that represents probation officers, is warning that the service cannot cope with the numbers of prisoners being let out of jail early. And they say that public safety, especially that of women who've been victims of sexual and domestic abuse, is at risk.
