New national safety standards for e-bikes and e-scooters will be implemented in Australia from early next year, with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission setting limits on speed and power of devices that can be legally sold. The regulations complement recently agreed transport rules including a maximum speed of 25 kilometres per hour, with retailers facing penalties up to $100 million for non-compliance. The measures follow dozens of deaths in recent years involving the battery-powered devices, which have proven deceivingly powerful and under-regulated.
