How do you know when hard work becomes too much? For AISB student and football player Emilia Bourke, that question became impossible to ignore after an injury forced her to stop doing the thing she loved most. Emilia reflects on the pressure many ambitious students place on themselves to keep pushing, keep improving, and keep doing more. Drawing on the Greek myth of Icarus and her own experience in sport, she explores a belief that often goes unquestioned: that being constantly stressed, exhausted, or overwhelmed is proof that you are working hard enough. Her message is not to lower your ambitions. It is to recognize that success should not come at the expense of your wellbeing, and that rest is not something you earn after working hard—it is part of what allows you to keep growing. Emilia Bourke is a student at the American International School of Budapest. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
