Could Malaysia's oldest political coalition be making a comeback? Barisan Nasional was once the country's dominant political force. It has been gaining ground again since joining Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's unity government in 2022. Although BN and Pakatan Harapan govern together at the federal level, they remain fierce rivals in state elections. UMNO, the coalition's largest party, has continued to promote Malay unity. Yet analysts say BN's recent gains also reflect voter frustration with PM Anwar's government, among other factors.
