That’s the financial reality for former software engineer Alvin Tan, whose Hokkien mee stall brings in up to S$19,000 a month in revenue. Nearly half goes to ingredients. Then there's rent, utilities and manpower. And he has to sell around 45 plates before he can start paying himself. But for Alvin, the appeal of running his own business isn’t just about what he takes home. “Owning your own stuff is different from working for someone ...
