Exceptionally low water levels along Romania’s stretch of the Danube have disrupted shipping and fishing, with sandbanks emerging and boats becoming stranded as prolonged heat and drought reduce river flows. At Corabia, the river has reached its lowest level there since 1985, according to local authorities, effectively cutting off the tourist and commercial ports and forcing grain shipments to move to more expensive road transport. Fishermen said shallow water and extensive duckweed were making fishing increasingly difficult, while algae rising from the riverbed and fish moving toward deeper water were further disrupting catches. In Bechet, residents were seen keeping cattle in the warm, shallow river to help them cool down.
