China is looking for alternatives to vulnerable maritime chokepoints as Iran’s Strait of Hormuz blockade continues to threaten global shipping and energy flows. Russia’s Rosatom has reportedly approved seven Chinese vessels to sail along the Northern Sea Route during the 2026 navigation season. Chinese company Sea Legend is also seeking to establish a regular container service through the Arctic, with weekly voyages planned during the season. Rosatom says this would represent a shift from previous experimental or one-off container shipments toward a fully fledged regular service. Russian President Vladimir Putin has also emphasized Moscow’s control of the Northern Sea Route and Russia’s investment in nuclear-powered icebreakers.
