"China Travel" is here to stay, with foreign visitors now venturing off the beaten track and into the scorching sand, where they get buried up to the chest or neck. In Turpan, northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, often dubbed China's hottest place, sand therapy dates back centuries among the local Uygur community. They believe the naturally heated sand, which can reach 50 degrees Celsius, helps relieve rheumatic conditions, muscle soreness and fatigue. The practice was documented in Tang Dynasty (618-907) medical texts and recognized as a national-level intangible cultural heritage in 2014.
