The United Steelworkers has spent years publicly backing Trump's trade policies — 850,000 members and retirees, one of the most reliably pro-tariff labor voices in the country. On July 29, that union broke with him. In a joint letter with the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (600,000 more members), they told Trump's own trade representative, directly, to reconsider the 50% tariffs on Canada set to hit August 19. This isn't a union discovering free trade. USW backed Trump's original steel tariffs and praised the doubling to 50%. Members showed up to a Trump rally this summer wearing "Steelworkers for Trump" shirts. The letter calls the new tariffs "unfair trade" — the exact word Washington has used against Canada for two years, turned back on Washington itself.
