The 2026 census is set to take place on Tuesday, August 11. It's compulsory, and not filling it out could land you a $364 fine. Data from this year's census will start to be released in June of 2027, and will be used to inform government policy, businesses and community groups. There will also be a few new questions. For the first time, Australians aged 16 and over will be asked in the 2026 census to identify their sexual orientation and sex recorded at birth. Participants can also choose up to four cultural ancestries and say whether they ride a bicycle or e-bike to work, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
