Recent tsunamis and tsunami warnings have reminded Japan just how vulnerable the country remains to the Pacific's immense power. In 2025, powerful earthquakes triggered tsunami alerts affecting large stretches of Japan's coastline, forcing tens of thousands of residents to evacuate while authorities rushed to assess the threat. Some warnings covered parts of Hokkaido, Aomori, Iwate, and other northeastern regions, with waves observed along the coast and emergency systems activated across affected areas. Although the waves were far smaller than the catastrophic 2011 disaster, the events disrupted transportation, triggered mass evacuations, and demonstrated how quickly a tsunami threat can emerge.
