In a world defined by "unpredictability within repeating patterns" (chaos), Dr. Robin Carter challenges us to find a "survival phenotype"—a strategy for flourishing despite inevitable catastrophes. Drawing inspiration from author Paul Kingsnorth, the speech proposes that the key to a worthwhile survival lies in nurturing four traditional human values: Past, Place, People, and Prayer (ultimate value). Using two contrasting examples—our rat-like mammalian ancestor surviving the dinosaur extinction and the character Jamal from Slumdog Millionaire—Carter demonstrates how these 4 Ps equip us for the future. Our cultural heritage (Past) gives us the belief that "dragons can be killed." Knowing and caring for our environment (Place) provides the raw materials for solutions.
