Government declares national emergency after major earthquake rips through Colombia

A powerful earthquake hit several Colombian cities, including the capital Bogotá on Monday morning. The number of dead is climbing rapidly as rescue workers dig through the rubble. A number of cities were hit in a broad crescent of destruction from the capital Bogota, to the centre of coffee production in Pereira and the city of Cali, a bustling urban sprawl of three million people.
