NHS GP Dr Bhasha Mukherjee has urged caution after the UK reportedly became the first European country to approve a new oral weight-loss treatment. Speaking to David Bull, Dr Mukherjee said the tablet could offer a more convenient option for people living with obesity, but warned that its long-term effects and accessibility must be carefully considered. She argued that expensive treatments risk worsening health inequalities if they remain unavailable through the NHS, while patients could be given false hope by publicity surrounding so-called “magic pills”. The pair also discussed England’s progress towards eliminating hepatitis C, praising clinicians and community healthcare teams for treating more than 100,000 people since 2015. Dr Mukherjee said: “As exciting as this is as an alternative option, people should be very mindful about what we don’t know.” Have you got a story?
