A record 230 people have crossed the English Channel in a single small boat, the largest number ever recorded on one vessel. The overcrowded inflatable was described as “buckling” in the water by French rescuers, highlighting the increasingly dangerous tactics being used by people-smuggling gangs. The record comes despite a significant fall in Channel crossings overall. More than 15,000 people have crossed so far in 2026, down 43% compared with the same period last year, with the government pointing to increased disruption of smuggling operations. Julia Hartley-Brewer is joined by Matthew Syed, Columnist at The Times and The Sunday Times, to discuss this. #immigration #illegalimmigration #smallboats #andyburnham #news Have you got a story?
