President Droupadi Murmu has given assent to the Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Bill, 2026, making it law. The legislation criminalises the intentional disruption or prevention of the singing of ‘Vande Mataram’, giving the national song legal protection similar to that accorded to the national anthem. The Bill was passed by both Houses of Parliament in July.
