In August 1999, Cornwall was the only part of mainland Britain to witness the full blacking out of the Sun by the Moon. ITV News's archive shows how people flocked to the South West to get a glimpse. On Wednesday 12th August 2026, skywatchers are in for a rare celestial treat, as the most significant solar eclipse since 1999 will be visible across the UK. In the UK, there will be a partial eclipse, with up to 96% of the Sun obscured by the Moon in some areas - the most it has been blocked since the total eclipse in 1999. • Subscribe to ITV News on YouTube: http://bit.ly/2lOHmNj • Get breaking news and more stories at http://www.itv.com/news Follow ITV News on TikTok https://www.tiktok.com/@itvnews?lang=en Follow ITV News on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/itvnews/ Follow ITV News on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/itvnews/ Follow ITV News on X: https://twitter.com/itvnews
