Probation officers have overwhelmingly backed potential industrial action amid warnings that supervising approximately 5,000 additional released offenders could put public safety at risk. Prison Officers’ Association national chair Mark Fairhurst says that “under no circumstances” should Jessie Cole and Albert Bowers be released early from their 13-year sentences for the manslaughter of PC Andrew Harper. Prime Minister Andy Burnham has ordered Justice Secretary Alex Norris to find additional prison capacity and prevent the pair from becoming eligible for release under changes intended to ease overcrowding.
