Broadcast on 12/08/2026 Skywatchers across the UK are in for a celestial treat on August 12, as a deep partial solar eclipse is set to unfold during the evening. The UK will experience its most impressive solar eclipse since 1999, with up to 96% of the Sun obscured in parts of the country. Experts have urged people to make sure they take care to protect their eyes if they wish to observe the eclipse. Following the 1999 total solar eclipse, the Royal College of Ophthalmologists reported around 70 cases of people experiencing vision problems after watching it. Around 40% had looked at it for less than a minute. Opticians have warned people to also double-check they are getting the right glasses, adding that some glasses marketed as "eclipse glasses" may not have the correct certification.
