Conservative commentator Benedict Spence has accused Andy Burnham of entering Downing Street without a credible plan to tackle illegal Channel crossings. Speaking to Julia Hartley-Brewer, Benedict criticised Burnham’s suggestion that all parts of the country should “play their part” in accommodating asylum seekers. He argued that politicians who support current immigration policies are often insulated from their consequences. Benedict also dismissed the Government’s focus on people-smuggling gangs as a political catchphrase intended to divert responsibility from the policies and incentives driving the crossings. He said: “Burnham has come in without a plan — and now, after a couple of weeks, it’s very clear to everybody that he doesn’t have a plan.” Julia also criticised voters for supporting politicians who make unrealistic promises, saying: “When you insist on politicians telling you you can have everything you want and someone else will pay for it, then you get the politicians y
