Fifty police chiefs have united to fight the early release of PC Andrew Harper’s killers, putting further pressure on Prime Minister Andy Burnham over the government’s prison release plans. Meanwhile, “overwhelmed” probation officers have warned that the early release of prisoners could increase the risk of serious crime, amid concerns about already-stretched staff and their ability to properly supervise offenders released into the community. David Shipley, an investigative journalist and former prisoner, joins Julia Hartley-Brewer to argue that the system is “broken and failing”, warning that releasing offenders early could lead to more crime, reoffending and further pressure on an already struggling justice system. #police #crime #earlyrelease #prisons #andyburnham Have you got a story?
