Air India Flight AI-2379 from Phuket to Delhi lost 300 feet of altitude during cruise on August 4, injuring 20 passengers and four cabin crew. The aircraft stabilised and landed safely, but questions emerged after reports that the pilot-in-command returned a non-negative screening result for psychoactive substances. A second test reportedly tested positive for marijuana, although a drug test alone does not establish impairment while flying. India has had DGCA rules for psychoactive-substance testing since 2022, including random testing of 10% of pilots and air traffic controllers annually, post-incident testing, confirmatory laboratory checks and medical review.
