Voyager 2 was never supposed to still be doing this. Nearly 49 years after launch, NASA’s Voyager 2 spacecraft is still exploring interstellar space — and engineers have just found a new way to keep its remaining science instruments operating. NASA calls the power-saving operation the “Big Bang.” With Voyager 2 steadily losing electrical power, engineers were approaching a point where another science instrument would have to be shut down. Instead, they found a way to reduce power consumption and preserve all three remaining instruments for at least another year. But the real story goes far beyond keeping an old spacecraft alive. Voyager 2 and Voyager 1 are still humanity’s only spacecraft to have operated beyond the heliosphere, directly measuring particles, magnetic fields and plasma waves in interstellar space. Every additional year gives scientists more data from a region humanity has barely begun to explore. In this video, we explore NASA’s latest Voyager 2 update, the Big Bang man
