Treasury just got one of its own tax calculations wrong by around $88,000. Everyone makes mistakes. But when you’re designing tax laws that can influence decisions involving millions of dollars, getting the numbers right matters. This is exactly what concerns me about Australia’s increasingly complicated tax system. Another rule. Another threshold. Another exemption. Another amendment. Eventually, the system becomes so complicated that even the people designing it struggle to get it right. If we’re changing how Australians’ retirement savings are taxed, surely we should get the modelling right before changing the rules.
