I can’t help but wonder about the ripple effects this eclipse will have around the world. So at 92% coverage here, this is the largest coverage of the Sun by the Moon in an eclipse the UK has seen since the eclipse of 1999. I remember that eclipse, I was 9, and it was the first time I remember being aware of the universe whirring away right above my head. It’s what got me into astronomy and being obsessed with space and science. So I can’t but wonder about all the kids and people out there watching today’s eclipse and getting inspired too. Whether that’s just to get out there and enjoy the night sky, or whether like me they end up doing a PhD in astrophysics in a decade or so because of this eclipse. And all the new science we’ll learn from that. Just makes you think you know…. #eclipse #eclipse2026 #ukeclipse #moon --- 👩🏽💻 I'm Dr. Becky Smethurst, an astrophysicist at the University of Oxford.
